Consider Becoming A Football Official?
For years, many of us have sat in front of the TV on Saturday and/or Sunday
and watched others officiate football and said: "I can do that!"
Others have looked for a hobby or avocation that will enable them to stay
active and in shape, enjoy the outdoors, deal with challenges and people,
earn a little extra money, and enable them to give something back to the community.
Officiating football on the high school and youth league levels does all of
that and more.
Why should you consider becoming a football official?
First and foremost,
because it is fun! Football officials
share a passion for the sport of football and officiating
is as close as you can get to the action without actually
playing. Officials are the third team on the field and
provide a vital service without which the games could
not be played.
Secondly, there
is the self-fulfillment of knowing that
you can demonstrate that you know the rules and
can administer them fairly, often in the face in criticism
and adversity. Officiating also helps you hone your
decision-making and communications skills and teaches
you to act in an unbiased and fair manner. All of these
are skills that are vital to success in many other avenues
of life.
Third, there
is the camaraderie of being part of a
team and getting to know and working with others
from various professions and walks of life. Many officials
make numerous life long friends in the course of their
officiating careers. Officiating is also an excellent
source of exercise and gives many of us the motivation
necessary to stay in good shape. Every game officiated
is unique, creating an environment that is never boring
and always challenging!
